A panel of 4 judges had the difficult task of reviewing 30 entries from the K-1st, 2-4th and 5-6th grade categories based on the semi-final round of the contest.  Each entry was judged on a series of questions to determine if the entry portrayed a work zone and if the students had a clear understanding of a work zone.  After each judge scored the drawings, IDOT tallied the scores and the 12 finalists were determined.

IDOT, along with the Illinois State Board of Education, the American Traffic Safety Services Foundation (ATSSF), and the Illinois Chapter of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), coordinated this statewide contest.

A total of 94 schools submitted 526 drawings for this contest. Over 3,450 students participated statewide in this year’s contest. Since the contest began in 2005, over 17,000 elementary students have participated in the contest and learned about work zone safety!

The top 12 winners will have their artwork displayed in the 2013 Illinois Work Zone Safety Calendar and will receive their awards and prizes at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, IL. The top two finalists in each category will move on to compete in the National Work Zone Safety Calendar Contest sponsored by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA). If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Keldermans at 217/785-3062.
