Illinois FIRST and You
We provide safe, cost-effective transportation for
Illinois in ways that enhance quality of life, promote
economic prosperity, and demonstrate respect for our
environment.
This is the mission of the Illinois Department of
Transportation. It guides us as we carry out our vital
responsibility of building and maintaining Illinois’
transportation system, including the third-largest public
road system in the nation. Most importantly, it represents
the enthusiastic, professional attitude of the people who
are the Illinois Department of Transportation.
These people, from all over the globe, have made the
Illinois Department of Transportation one of the top
transportation agencies in the nation.
And we will continue to move forward!
With a boost in funding from the Illinois FIRST
infrastructure investment program, the department will
undertake a highway and bridge construction program in
excess of $10 billion over the next five years. Illinois
FIRST also enhanced the department’s resources for airport
construction, mass transit improvements and developing
inter-city high speed rail service. As a result, we are
looking for bright, energetic engineers to come work with
some of the best transportation people in the industry.
