SPRINGFIELD, IL -- The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that highway construction work will be suspended, where possible, on state highways to give motorists a break for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Work zone areas will be opened for normal traffic patterns during the afternoon of Thursday, July 3, and will remain open until midnight Sunday, July 6.
However, there will be a number of work zones that will continue to have lane closures. Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert in those work zones, and are reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect. Projects across the state that will continue to have lane closures are:

ADAMS COUNTY

• US 24 eastbound (Quincy Memorial Bridge), closed for painting. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Quincy Bayview Bridge. One lane in each direction.
• IL 96, replace Curtis Creek Bridge south of State St. in Quincy. One lane open, traffic controlled by signals.
• IL 96, closed between I-172 and Payson for reconstruction. Detour posted over I-72 and I-172.

ALEXANDER COUNTY

• I-57, 1 mile south of Cairo, Bridge repairs. One southbound and one northbound lane open to traffic.

BUREAU COUNTY

• I-80, mile post 36 to 40, bridge repairs, one lane open in each direction.
• I-80, mile post 50, bridge repairs, one lane open in each direction.

CALHOUN COUNTY

• IL 100 at Hardin, bridge repairs. One lane open, two-way traffic maintained by traffic signals.

COOK COUNTY

• I-290/IL 53, through Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village, reconstruction. Three lanes in each direction. Entrance ramp at IL 72 to northbound I-290/IL 53 closed.
• I-57, from Dan Ryan Expressway to I-80, resurfacing and bridge rehabilitation. Two lanes open in each direction.
• I-80 at US 45, interchange and bridge reconstruction. One lane open in each direction on US 45 over I-80. Detour posted at I-80 ramp closures and at 179th St.
• IL 58/Golf Road, from the Des Plaines River to US 45/Des Plaines River Rd., new turn lanes, bridge work, upgrade traffic signals, drainage. One lane open in each direction on Golf Rd. and Des Plaines River Rd.
• IL 72/Higgins Rd. from Fairmont to Roselle, and IL 58/Golf Rd. from Roselle to Moon Lake Blvd., reconstruction and add lanes. Two lanes open in each direction on IL 58, all lanes open on IL 72.
• IL 83, Dundee Rd. to Lake-Cook Rd., reconstruction, bridge replacement, traffic signal improvements. One lane open in each direction.

• US 30, closed through Shabbona to replace the pavement. Traffic detoured around Shabbona on Preserve Rd. and Indian Rd.

• US 20 from Addison Road to Walnut Street, reconstruction and bridge replacement at Route 83. One lane open in each direction from Villa Avenue to Addison Road.
• US 20/ Lake Street over IL 64 and at Railroad Avenue, bridge rehabilitation and intersection reconstruction. Westbound US 20 bridge over IL 64 is closed and detour posted.

• US 20, over Cunningham Rd. on southwest side of Rockford. Bridge replacement, one lane of traffic in each direction.
• US 20, over Coolidge Creek, 7 miles west of Rockford. Bridge replacement, one lane of traffic in each direction.
• IL 2, over a stream 1.2 miles south of Rockford. Bridge replacement, one lane of traffic controlled by signals.

Summer and holidays are typically peak travel times. The Department is asking the motorists to help make this summer a safe travel season by doing the following:

• Give yourself more time to reach your destination by planing ahead.
• Keep enough distance between you and the motorists ahead of you.
• Always be prepared to stop.
• Buckle up while traveling.
• Don't drink and drive.
• Don't drive while you are tired.
• Always focus on your driving. Speed and driver distractions are the major causes of work zone crashes.
• IDOT asks semis to turn on their emergency flashers when entering a work zone to warn motorists behind them that they are slowing or stopping.

Additional State Police will be out patrolling to help keep this season a safe season. By working together and obeying the rules of the road lives will be saved.
