Major Traffic Impact Expected at I-55 and Tri-State Tollway
as Three Ramps Close for Reconstruction
SCHAUMBURG--As the interchange improvement project for I-55 at the Tri-State
Tollway (I-294) moves into its final stage of construction beginning this
weekend, motorists will experience some major traffic impacts as three ramps
will be closed for reconstruction.
First, the good news. On the evening of Saturday, June 22, the southbound
I-55 ramp to northbound I-294 will re-open to traffic.
Then, that same night, the two ramps from southbound I-294 to
northbound I-55 and to Joliet Road will close.
Finally, by the morning of June 25, the ramp from northbound I-55 to
northbound I-294 will also be shut down. All three ramps will remain closed
until the end of the project on October 31. Detours will be posted.
Significant congestion and delays are expected. Motorists are encouraged
to plan ahead and to use alternate routes if possible.
Overall, the $12.7 million project will replace and widen two bridges and
reconstruct and realign five ramps.
Motorists will be detoured as follows:
- Southbound I-294 to Northbound I-55
Detour: Southbound I-55 exit to southbound County Line Road to northbound
I-55.
- Southbound I-294 to Joliet Road
Detour: Southbound I-55 exit to southbound County Line Road to northbound
I-55 to northbound La Grange Road (U.S. 12/20/45) to Joliet Road.
- Northbound I-55 to Northbound I-294
Detour: Northbound I-55 to exit on left (Joliet Road) rather than on the
right. Traffic then will turn left at a temporary traffic signal to access an
existing ramp to northbound I-294.
