expect approximately 20 minute stoppages on westbound I-74 during the afternoon
hours of Monday & Tuesday (September 21st and 22nd) near the US 34 interchange,
about two miles north of Galesburg. The ramp from eastbound US 34 to westbound
I-74 will be closed in the afternoon these two days.

the nation for the implementation of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). According to Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA) data, Illinois ranks first among all states in the
total expenditure of ARRA funds. To date, expenditures of ARRA funds in
Illinois total $170,605,614, which is nearly triple the expenditures of
the next highest state.

Officials from Governor Pat Quinn’s administration announced today that
the project along the I-55/I-70 and IL 162 Interchange near Troy will
begin on Monday. The $23.5 million project is funded by the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and will be utilized for the
removal of the existing bridge at the interchange, construction of a new
bridge and a single-point interchange to increase the fluid movement of
traffic.

urged Illinois drivers to buckle up and stay sober as they get ready to
hit the roadways for the Fourth of July weekend. Secretary Hannig also
announced that IDOT will make sure roads are open wherever possible, but

Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig announced that work zone fatalities
are down 29.6 percent compared to 2003. Aggressive law enforcement and
education campaigns and significant improvements to work zone safety
traffic control reduced Illinois work zone fatalities from 44 in 2003,
including 5 workers, to provisionally 31 with 2 workers killed in 2008.

(CREATE) public and private partners announced the completion of a $4.5
million railroad modernization project. The project improved the 40
year-old signal system and helped mitigate conflicting use of tracks
among freight trains, Metra, and Amtrak along the Indiana Harbor Belt
Corridor from Bedford Park to Summit.

Scholarship Program. The new scholarship program utilizes federal
transportation funds to enhance the diversity and quality of IDOT’s
civil engineering workforce. The selected recipients will be offered up
to $3,500 in tuition assistance for the upcoming Spring 2009 semester.
