Project Overview
Illinois Route 64 construction consists of five contracts.
Each contract performs different types of work in specific
locations.
IL 64 (7th Avenue to IL 59) – Tree Removal (Advance Work Contract)
A tree removal contract has been let in advance of the two IL 64
mainline contracts to facilitate the relocation of the existing
utilities impacted by the projects.
IL 64 (7th Avenue to Dunham Road)
The existing roadway section from 7th Avenue to Dunham Road generally
consists of four 11 to 12 foot wide lanes separated by a painted
centerline and edge treatments including concrete curb and gutter,
gravel or paved shoulders or a combination of these. Separate left turns
are provided only at major intersections. Continuous sidewalk is located
on the north side of the street. Segments of sidewalk are located at
various locations on the south side of the street.
The proposed scope of work for the section of IL Route 64 from 7th
Avenue to Dunham Road consists of approximately 1300 feet of pavement
reconstruction and pavement widening and resurfacing of the remaining
existing pavement to accommodate a bi-directional turn lane (a five lane
cross section) and drainage system improvements. Traffic staging will
require one lane in each direction throughout the reconstruction portion
on the west end. Two lanes in each direction will be maintained in the
widening and resurfacing portion of the project. The proposed lane
widths will consist of four 12 foot wide through lanes with a 12 to 14
foot wide painted median. The painted median will allow for dedicated
left turn lanes at significant cross streets and will be used as a 2-way
left turn lane between intersections. The existing roadway shoulder will
be replaced with continuous combination concrete curb and gutter on both
sides of IL 64. The existing open/closed drainage system will be
replaced with a fully enclosed storm sewer system for the roadway.
Existing street lighting on IL 64 is provided on an intermittent basis.
New continuous roadway lighting will be installed from 7th Avenue to
Dunham Road. The existing traffic signals on IL 64 will be modernized
and interconnected. Segments of existing water main owned by the City of
St. Charles will be replaced.
IL 64 (Dunham Road to Kautz Road) – Resurfacing Project
The existing roadway section on IL 64 from Dunham Road to Kautz Road
generally consists of two 12 foot lanes in each direction separated by
a striped or barrier median. The existing edge of pavement consists of
either combination concrete curb and gutter or aggregate shoulders.
The proposed scope of work for this section consists of
hot-mix-asphalt surface removal, concrete surface removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs,
removal and replacement of combination concrete curb and gutter at
various locations, resurfacing with polymerized leveling binder and
hot-mix asphalt surface course, replacement of traffic signal detector
loops, placement of thermoplastic pavement marking and raised reflective
pavement markers. There are no changes to the roadway geometry.
IL 64 (West of Kautz Road to IL 59) – Reconstruction Project
The existing roadway section on IL 64 from IL 59 to Kautz Road
generally consists of four 12 foot lanes in each direction separated by
a striped centerline. The existing shoulders consist of gravel shoulders
with open drainage ditches on both sides of IL 64. There are no
sidewalks within this section.
The proposed scope of work for the section of IL 64 from IL 59 to
Kautz Road consists of construction of additional through lanes and
involves pavement reconstruction to provide for three lanes of traffic
in each direction separated by a 16 to 30 foot wide landscaped barrier
median. The roadside edge treatment will consist of the construction of
a 12 foot wide shoulder with an open drainage ditch on both sides of IL
64. A new storm sewer system will be constructed under the landscape
median for the collection of roadway drainage from the inside lanes and
median areas. The existing bridge carrying IL 64 over the EJ&E Railroad
and UP Railroad east of Powis Road will be reconstructed to accommodate
the new roadway cross section. New continuous roadway lighting will be
installed on IL 64 from IL 59 to 38th Avenue / East Mall Drive. The
existing traffic signals on IL 64 from Atlantic Drive to 38th Avenue /
East Mall Drive will be modernized and interconnected. Sections of
existing watermain owned by the City of St. Charles will be removed and
replaced.
IL 64 (Kautz Road / Smith Road to IL 59)– Building Demolition
(Advance Work Contract)
A demolition contract has been let in advance of the IL 64 from IL 59
to Kautz Road. The contract is for the removal of a one story building
located at the southeast corner of IL 64 and Powis Road. The removal of
the existing building will facilitate the relocation of the existing
utilities impacted by the project.
