Project Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
plans to reconstruct and widen Illinois Route 53 (Rohlwing Road)
from Army Trail Road on the southern limits to the Elgin O’ Hare
Expressway on the northern limits. IDOT will widen the existing
two-lane roadway to provide a five-lane roadway comprised of two
lanes in each direction and a center median for left turns. Roadway
shoulders and drainage ditches will be replaced with concrete curbs
and gutters along with an underground storm sewer system. IL Route
53 (Rohlwing Rd) project will replace sidewalks impacted by
construction and add new sidewalks along the project area.
IDOT will provide major intersection improvements. These
improvements include additional thru lanes, left turn lanes, barrier
medians, and traffic signal modernization. Barrier medians are
proposed at the intersections of Army Trail Road, Lake Street, and
Irving Park Road. The barrier median design will accommodate
u-turns, access to all properties, and pavement markings. In
addition, roadway lighting for Illinois Route 53 will be provided
between Lake Street and Army Trail Road.
* On September 25-30, 2012,
Medinah Country Club will host the PGA Ryder Cup. Illinois Route 53
construction will be coordinated with the PGA Ryder Cup.
