PROJECT OVERVIEW The Illinois
Department of Transportation will construct a full interchange for the
Interstate 57 overpass at Interstate 294. The overall Interstate 57/294
Interchange Project will consist of 11 separate contracts. Preliminary work will
begin this fall with construction of the overpass ending in 2012. The Interstate
57/294 Project will be funded with a mix of state and federal dollars. Future
contracts will be dependent on federal approval and funding from the Federal
Highway Administration. CONTRACT #1
Contract #1 calls for removing and replacing the northbound
and southbound Interstate 57 bridges over Interstate 294. In addition,
Interstate 57 will be widened to accommodate the traffic movements of the future
interchange. Preliminary work starts in the fall of 2010 with completion
anticipated in 2012. The first contract will be constructed with State-only
funds.

UPDATE- January 2013 for Contract #1 (60J27)
Construction is substantially completed and open to traffic as of 11/20/2012. The work remaining includes: Installation of High
Mast Light Towers, paving NB I-57 lanes, landscaping and painting bridge beams on I-57 over I-294 bridges. This Contract is estimated to be 100% complete by May 2013.
CONTRACT #2
Contract #2 calls for the staged replacement of the structure at Kedzie Avenue over I-57 with a new, longer structure which will
carry Kedzie Avenue over I-57 and future Ramps B and M. The Kedzie approaches will also be reconstructed adjacent to the bridge.
Resurfacing will be done from the limits of reconstruction up to the Kedzie Avenue signalized intersections on each side of the bridge. The curb and gutter, concrete median, guardrail and detector loops were replaced throughout the project limits.

UPDATE- January 2013 for Contract #2 (60K14)
Construction began on 11/22/2011 and was substantially completed and open to traffic on 11/9/2012. Work remaining includes painting bridge beams.
This Contract is estimated to be 100% completed by May 2013.
CONTRACT #3
Contract #3 calls for the Widening & Reconstruction of 147th Street from Kedzie Avenue to Sacramento Avenue and from Mozart
Avenue to Dixie Highway/Western Avenue, along with improvements to the Dixie Highway/Western Avenue intersection approach
pavements as well as limited work on the SB I-57 Exit Ramp to 147th Street (from gore area), NB I-57 Entrance Ramp from 147th Street (from gore area), and NB I-57 Exit Ramp to 147th street (from gore area). Included in the project will be new main drain storm
sewer, roadway lighting, new traffic signals at the 147th Street intersections with Kedzie, Harrison, Cleveland, West I-57 Ramp, East
I-57 Ramp and Dixie/Western, sidewalk and driveway repair/replacement, signing, pavement marking and restoration.
